What Tulum is good at
Tulum's strengths are ayahuasca, ceremony-format psilocybin, jungle-based retreat settings, integration-focused programmes, and the kind of multi-week container that benefits from being somewhere genuinely different from your daily life. The jungle outside Tulum proper — toward Chemuyil and the back roads — has space for solar-powered eco-retreats, cenote-fed pools, and open-air ceremony spaces.
What Tulum is not
Tulum is not where you'd go for medically-supervised ibogaine treatment — for that, look at the Cancún and Cozumel clusters within the same region, or at Baja California. Tulum is also not cheap. The tourist economy has driven prices in the area up considerably, and most plant medicine retreats here sit at the mid-to-premium end of the price range.
Practical notes
Tulum is approximately 90 minutes by road from Cancún International Airport. Most retreat centres arrange transfers. The new Tulum Airport (opened 2023) offers some direct flights but with much more limited routing than Cancún. The drive south is on a well-maintained federal highway.
The town itself is small. Most retreats operate in the surrounding jungle or beach areas rather than in the town centre. Phone reception ranges from good to nonexistent depending on location — and for ceremonial work, this is often a feature, not a bug.
