Mexico is the global hub for ibogaine treatment. Ibogaine is not a scheduled substance under Mexican law, which has allowed a network of medically-supervised clinics to develop — particularly in Baja California (Tijuana, Rosarito) and the Cancún area. This is also the most medically serious of the plant medicines listed on this site.
Ibogaine prolongs the cardiac QT interval and can trigger arrhythmias in vulnerable patients. Any clinic offering ibogaine without a pre-treatment ECG, ongoing cardiac monitoring during dosing, and physician oversight is operating below the safety standard. Most known ibogaine fatalities in the literature occurred in unsupervised settings. If a provider you're considering doesn't require ECG and continuous cardiac monitoring, look elsewhere.
Ibogaine is a naturally-occurring alkaloid from the root bark of Tabernanthe iboga, a shrub native to Gabon and Cameroon in Central Africa, where it has been used in Bwiti ceremonial tradition for centuries. Howard Lotsof first documented its anti-addictive properties in 1962, observing that a single dose interrupted his opioid dependence.
The most recent published evidence is the Stanford-led trial of 30 special operations veterans with traumatic brain injury, published in Nature Medicine in 2024: an 87% reduction in PTSD symptoms, 88% reduction in depression, and 81% reduction in anxiety symptoms one month after a single ibogaine session in Mexico, paired with magnesium for cardiac protection.
