Oaxaca and central Mexico.
Where it all started.

Huautla de Jiménez in the Mazatec mountains of Oaxaca is the place where Western science first encountered psilocybin mushrooms. The work of curandera María Sabina with R. Gordon Wasson in the 1950s — published in Life magazine in 1957 — initiated the chain of events that produced the entire modern psychedelic field. Central Mexico is also where the contemporary plant medicine retreat scene is most rooted in indigenous lineage.

The cultural geography

What is loosely called "central Mexico" for plant medicine purposes includes the states of Oaxaca, Morelos (where Tepoztlán is), Estado de México (Valle de Bravo), Guanajuato (San Miguel de Allende), and Puebla. These are higher-altitude, cooler, and culturally distinct from the Caribbean coast. The pace is slower, the orientation more contemplative, and the indigenous-lineage roots considerably deeper.

Most psilocybin retreats in this region either employ Mazatec-lineage facilitators directly or operate in close cultural and ceremonial relationship with Mazatec, Mixtec, or Huichol traditions. The form of the ceremony — typically held overnight, in a quiet room, with a trained curandera or curandero — differs noticeably from the ayahuasca-format ceremonies more common on the coast.

Tepoztlán: the research and ceremony hub

Tepoztlán, in the state of Morelos, is roughly 90 minutes south of Mexico City. It sits at the foot of a dramatic mountain range, has been a destination for spiritual seekers for over a century, and now hosts some of the most clinically- and research-oriented plant medicine work in the country — including Tandava Retreats, the world's most comprehensive 5-MeO-DMT programme and the active research partner for University College London.

Tepoztlán also hosts IbogaQuest, one of Mexico's longest-running ibogaine facilities, and several psilocybin and ayahuasca centres. Despite its small size, it is one of the most concentrated nodes of plant medicine work in Mexico.

Practical notes

This region is best accessed via Mexico City International Airport. Tepoztlán and Valle de Bravo are 1.5–2.5 hour drives. San Miguel de Allende is closer to Querétaro and León airports. Oaxaca City has its own airport and serves the mountain communities to its north.

Weather is mild year-round at altitude, with a clear distinction between the November-April dry season and the May-October rainy season. Most retreat centres operate year-round, but the dry season offers more reliable conditions for outdoor sessions and hiking.
